Dr. Marv Westwood, a professor emeritus, counselling psychology, at the University of British Columbia and a recipient of the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals, and Carson Kivari, a registered clinical counsellor, will be making a presentation titled “‘Performing Self’ as an Action Based Therapeutic Approach for Working with Male Clients.”
The presentation will share the research on an initiative in which researchers in counselling psychology and theatre education at UBC collaborated with military veterans to produce a theatre production, Contact! Unload. The performance piece is a collective process offering an expressive vehicle for veterans to publicly reinterpret their struggles and experiences of transitioning from active service overseas to civilian life in ways that build resilience.
The presentation, on September 21, will look at theoretical foundations of the work, and identify specific applications for group counselling approaches with male clients in general, while screening selected video clips.
