On October 17, 2016, Professor Roger Lauzon gave some students at the Toronto campus an unforgettable experience as part of his special education class. Students toured the facilities of Variety Village, a community organization dedicated to helping children with disabilities reach their goals in life.
Following the tour, the uOttawa students tried their hand at a game of basketball to expose them to inclusive play and recreation. Students were split into teams and headed onto the basketball court—in a wheelchair! They discovered not only some very different rules but also just how challenging it can be to play basketball in a wheelchair. The game also served to highlight for these future teachers the importance of working together and how critical communication skills are in the classroom—as on the court—for teaching, learning and playing.
Through this activity, student teachers were given to a valuable learning experience in a stimulating and rewarding setting.
