Congratulations to Thursica Kovinthan, recipient of a Vanier Graduate Scholarship.
She’s a second year PhD student in organizational studies (supervised by Richard Maclure). The focus of her research is on education in Sri Lanka and other post-conflict countries. She is looking at citizenship and how education can be gendered.
The connection to Sri Lanka stems from her birth there. As Kovinthan explains, it’s a country she never went back to after coming to Canada in 1987 as a conflict refugee. “What better way to go back home, make my return by doing something positive in the sense of building peace and bringing two really divided communities in Sri Lanka together. My hope is to contribute to that a little bit.”
