The Faculty of Education hosted a delegation of school principals from Wales in January, as part of a collaboration with the National Academy of Educational Leadership, Wales (NAEL). Welsh and English are the two official languages of Wales and the Welsh medium school system operates in a minority language context, working constantly against assimilation due to the predominance of English. The school system works to promote Welsh language and culture in all their diversity and thus there are many similarities with francophone schools here in Ontario. The delegation’s objectives were to get to know the francophone context and to understand the challenges and adaptive response strategies. They visited the Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario (CÉPEO), the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE), and the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadiennes (FCFA). The members of the delegation were very pleased with their experience as our guests. We look forward to developing a more permanent partnership with the NAEL.
