Leveraging social media to increase digital citizenship and literacy

Megan Cotnam-Kappel joined the Faculty of Education as a professor in July 2016. Her areas of interest are educational technology, digital citizenship and digital literacy.
Together with Sylvie Lamoureux, she is currently conducting research involving students in three Ontario French-language high schools and the use of social media to develop digital citizenship and literacy skills.
This research explores the experiences of students vis-à-vis their digital citizenship and literacy skills. Very little research has been done in this area in French. In addition to contributing a body of body of literature on the issue of digital literacies, this work is also helping students strengthen their francophone identity and creating an environment where adults from outside their school setting reinforce this identity. And because the research is being done in French and looks at the topic from the students’ perspective, it contributes positively to their everyday life.
