Racist Incidents Online | Dean’s Message

Posted on Thursday, January 7, 2021

We, the members of the Faculty of Education, deplore all acts of racism. Discrimination in any form, at any time, and in any context is an affront to the values and mission of the Faculty. Sadly, racist incidents continue to occur during online events, and this despite increased security measures. During a recent public presentation by one of our graduate students, an intruder from outside the University community posted racist images and carried out verbal attacks. To those who may have experienced distress or harm, we express solidarity and encourage you to reach out for any support you might need. Those who commit discriminatory acts during online events must be held accountable. We invite all who witness inappropriate behaviour to report the incidents to the proper platform authorities, to the Faculty of Education or to the University of Ottawa. We take the safety and wellness of all of our Faculty members to heart, and are working to make certain our students, staff and professors follow protocols to ensure online event security.

Richard Barwell, Dean of the Faculty of Education
